Every contract you upload is run through an automated first pass that flags high-risk clauses — uncapped liability, one-sided indemnities, missing termination rights — before a lawyer opens the document. This is the free health check every upload gets, not a paid add-on.
Key clauses — payment terms, renewal dates, notice periods, liability caps — are extracted and structured so they can be tracked over time, not just read once. This is what powers the renewals calendar once a contract is in your repository.
Ask ContractDesk's AI a question about your own contracts and it answers from what it actually retrieved from your documents — with a confidence level and the specific contracts it drew from. When it hasn't found a match in your contracts, it says so and asks you to rephrase, instead of guessing from general knowledge.
Once contracts are in your repository, you can search across them by meaning, not just exact keyword matches — "NDAs with auto-renewal clauses," for instance, rather than a literal string search. This is an in-app tool for your own organisation's contracts, scoped to your account.
Cite-or-decline, not guess-and-hope
A common failure mode of AI assistants is answering confidently from general training data even when a question is really about a specific document it hasn't actually read closely. ContractDesk's assistant is built the other way: it retrieves the actual passages from your contracts first, and answers only from what it found — returning a confidence level and the specific contracts it drew from alongside the answer.
When nothing relevant is retrieved, it says so directly — "I couldn't find this in your contracts" — and asks you to rephrase, rather than filling the gap with a plausible-sounding guess. This is a deliberate, structural choice in how the assistant is built, not a claim we're asking you to take on faith.
What AI cannot assess — and why a lawyer still reviews every contract
Being honest about the limits is part of how we think about AI in this product. None of this is a hedge to avoid a claim — it's the actual reason every paid review ends with a qualified lawyer's sign-off, not an AI-generated report alone.
The AI scan tells you where to look and what pattern it recognises. It does not decide whether a clause is acceptable for your specific deal, your specific counterparty, or your specific risk tolerance — that judgement call is a lawyer's, on every paid review.
The assistant answers from what it retrieves out of your own contracts. It will not fill a gap with a plausible-sounding guess — if nothing relevant is retrieved, it says so rather than answering from general training data.
Flagging that a liability cap is uncapped is different from knowing what cap is actually reasonable to push for against a specific counterparty in a specific market — that context is what a lawyer brings to the redline, not the scan.
